Magdeburg theater presents 'Wunde Stadt' about Christmas market attack

Theater Magdeburg will stage a new play titled “Wunde Stadt” from 23 May, addressing the trauma of the 20 December 2024 Christmas‑market attack. The assault involved a 340‑horse‑power truck driven by 50‑year‑old Taleb Al‑Abdulmohsen, which ploughed through the market, killing five women and a nine‑year‑old boy and injuring more than 300 people.

Playwright Kevin Rittberger consulted victims, counselors and a chaplain to convey grief, healing and the varied ways people cope. The drama features a painter, a migrant‑background nurse, a grief‑support group and a reflecting chaplain, with ten local ensemble members. The production has sparked protests, with some demonstrators demanding a ban and linking the tragedy to migration debates. General Intendant Julien Chavaz emphasises the theatre’s role as a space for open discussion and artistic freedom, while noting a “red line” that must not be crossed. The driver’s trial is ongoing, with a verdict expected in June.
