Bubalcó Foundation provides new home for 40 rescued penguins
Forty Magellanic penguins previously housed at the Mar del Plata Aquarium in Argentina have been relocated to a new habitat at the Bubalcó Foundation in Río Negro. The move follows the closure and bankruptcy of the Mar del Plata institution.
Because these penguins were born and raised in captivity, judicial authorities determined they lack the necessary skills to survive in the wild, such as hunting or defending against predators. Consequently, releasing them into the open sea was ruled out.
The Bubalcó Foundation, a non-profit focused on wildlife conservation, underwent months of infrastructure work to prepare for the arrival. The new enclosure includes specialized water channels and ramp systems designed to facilitate swimming and exploration. The relocation was coordinated through a legal process involving the commercial court overseeing the aquarium's bankruptcy.
