Magen David Adom highlights blood donation needs after emergency in Tel Aviv

A severe postpartum hemorrhage in Tel Aviv highlighted the critical necessity of constant blood supplies in Israel. Yael Bibi required approximately 50 units of blood and blood components following emergency surgery ten days after giving birth.

Magen David Adom (MDA) noted that maintaining a steady supply is challenging, particularly during summer months when many citizens are on vacation. Dr. Shafir Botner, who oversees MDA’s paramedic training program, reported that the organization experienced shortages during July and August.

Because blood has a limited shelf life, MDA cannot rely on surpluses collected during winter to cover summer shortages. The organization emphasizes the need for continuous public donations to ensure hospitals have tested blood ready for emergencies.
