Venice Film Festival opens with ‘Ink’ and gender equality debate
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival has officially commenced on the Lido. The opening night featured the world premiere of ‘Ink’, directed by Danny Boyle, which explores the rise of the British tabloid The Sun. The event also honored George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn with Golden Lions for their lifetime achievements.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, serving as the president of the main competition jury, addressed the festival's opening press conference by highlighting a ‘systemic problem’ regarding gender inequality in cinema. She noted that women face significant hurdles in securing film financing and questioned why female-driven narratives are not always recognized as ‘high art’. This commentary follows criticism regarding the low number of female directors in the official competition, where only two of the 21 films are directed by women.
The festival, which runs until September 12, features a diverse lineup including European independent cinema and several Italian productions. Beyond the red carpet glamour, the event includes various side awards, such as the Sorriso Diverso Venezia Award, which recognizes films with social impact.
