Maghreb nationals account for 36% of French citizenship acquisitions
A study conducted by Fondapol and the Observatoire de l’immigration et de la démographie (OID) reveals that citizens from Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia accounted for 36% of all French nationality acquisitions over a twenty-year period between 2004 and 2023.
Out of 2.4 million people who acquired French citizenship during this timeframe, Moroccans ranked first with 404,000 acquisitions, followed by Algerians with 323,000, and Tunisians with 146,000. Turkish nationals followed with 135,000 acquisitions.
The data, which utilizes figures from Insee, the French Ministry of the Interior, and Eurostat, also highlights broader continental trends. People of African origin represented 61.5% of those who became French citizens during the study period, while those of European origin accounted for 20%.
