Magic Johnson details business strategies behind sports ownership

Magic Johnson has detailed the investment strategies that fueled his transition from NBA star to successful entrepreneur. He explained that his partnership with Starbucks involved a massive scale-up strategy where he reinvested all profits from initial locations to fund subsequent stores. Through a joint venture with Urban Coffee Opportunities, Johnson grew the operation to 125 locations before selling them back to Starbucks, a move that provided significant capital.

This capital helped facilitate his involvement in the $2.15 billion purchase of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012. Additionally, Johnson discussed his ownership of the Los Angeles Sparks, a WNBA franchise purchased for $10 million in 2014. Despite noting that the team did not initially generate profits, Johnson expressed relief that his investment group decided against selling the franchise early. He cited the surging popularity and rising market value of women’s sports as key factors in the team's growing worth, which Forbes recently valued at approximately $350 million.
