Maglaj implements heat pumps and solar panels to reduce air pollution

The municipality of Maglaj, located in the Zenica-Doboj Canton, is implementing measures to combat long-standing air pollution by replacing traditional heating methods with cleaner alternatives. More than 120 local users have received funding to transition to healthier energy production, with over 80 percent opting for heat pumps and others choosing pellet stoves.

Maglaj Mayor Maid Suljaković stated that the municipality aims to improve energy efficiency in public institutions and enterprises using heat pumps and solar panels. The Zenica-Doboj Canton is leading an air quality improvement project in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has already received over 2,000 applications. According to Ministry data, approximately 40 percent of household heating systems have been replaced, with a goal to complete the process by November.

While the focus remains on residential heating, representatives from the non-governmental sector, such as Davor Šupuković of the ‘Fojničani’ Association, have called for increased research into industrial pollution and its impact on soil quality and local food production.
