Magnesium: Benefits, deficiency signs, and drug interactions

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of bodily processes, including muscle function, nervous system regulation, energy production, and heart health. While widely used in supplements to address fatigue, sleep issues, and muscle cramps, its use requires caution regarding potential drug interactions.

Certain medications can interfere with magnesium absorption or be affected by its presence. Specifically, tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics may have reduced efficacy if taken simultaneously with magnesium. Additionally, magnesium can disrupt the absorption of bisphosphonates used for osteoporosis. Diuretics can also impact magnesium levels by either increasing its excretion through urine or contributing to its retention, necessitating careful monitoring for those on long-term diuretic therapy.

Common signs of magnesium deficiency include sleep disturbances, frequent muscle spasms or cramps, persistent fatigue, and hormonal changes. However, because these symptoms can overlap with other health conditions, they should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosis.
