Magnesium's role in health, stress, and nutrient absorption
Magnesium plays a critical role in human physiology, participating in over 300 enzymatic reactions. While it is often discussed in relation to stress, anxiety, and sleep quality, research indicates that supplementation is not a guaranteed cure for chronic stress or clinical insomnia. The National Institutes of Health notes that while magnesium is essential, physiological roles do not automatically translate to the treatment of complex psychological disorders.
Magnesium deficiency can lead to heart rhythm disturbances and impact both physical and mental performance. The effectiveness of magnesium intake depends heavily on bioavailability and absorption. Factors that can inhibit absorption include calcium, iron, zinc, sodium, phosphorus, and phytates found in grains and legumes. Additionally, oxalates present in foods such as spinach, rhubarb, and cocoa can form complexes in the intestines that reduce mineral absorption. Conversely, vitamin B6 and protein may support better absorption.
