Magnesium's role in muscle function, nutrition, and sleep quality

Magnesium is an essential mineral that supports muscle and nerve activity, bone health, and various metabolic processes. Nutritionists suggest that incorporating specific herbs into meals can help increase magnesium intake. For instance, dried coriander is highly concentrated in magnesium due to the removal of water during the drying process, while chives and sage also provide nutritional benefits including vitamins and antioxidants.

Regarding sleep, research published in the journal Nature and Science of Sleep investigated the effects of magnesium bisglycinate on adults with sleep difficulties. In a study of 155 participants, those receiving 250 milligrams of elemental magnesium daily showed a greater reduction in insomnia severity compared to a placebo group. However, researchers noted the benefit was statistically small and could not confirm improvements in deep sleep duration. Experts caution that while magnesium may benefit those with deficiencies, excessive supplementation can cause gastrointestinal issues and poses risks for individuals with kidney problems.
