Magnet Forensics sues Paradigm Shift over allegedly stolen Apple chip exploit

Magnet Forensics has filed a lawsuit against Paradigm Shift Technology, claiming the firm released the "usbliter8" exploit that targets the BootROM of Apple A12, A13, S4 and S5 chips. According to Magnet, the exploit was created using confidential research and trade secrets obtained from former employee Mario Del Gaudio, who worked on a highly sensitive project at Magnet from November 2023 to November 2024 before moving to Paradigm Shift.

The vulnerability allows arbitrary code execution before iOS boots, requires physical access to the device, and cannot be patched by software updates. Affected products include iPhone XS/XR, iPhone 11 series, certain iPad models, and Apple Watch Series 4 and 5. Apple has not publicly acknowledged the flaw. Magnet seeks damages, the removal of published technical details, and an injunction against further use of the exploit.

Paradigm Shift disclosed the exploit in June 2024 with technical documentation and a proof‑of‑concept, reportedly after coordinating with Apple’s security team. The case highlights the tension between independent security research and protection of corporate trade secrets.
