Magnitude 3.6 earthquake hits Vrancea region of Romania

A shallow earthquake struck Romania’s Vrancea seismic zone in the early hours of 11 June 2026. According to the National Institute for Research and Development in Earth Physics (INCDFP), the tremor occurred at 01:58 local time, reached a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale and originated at a depth of about 119 km.

The epicentre was located roughly 44 km south of Focșani, 59 km south of Buzău, 68 km east of Sfântu‑Gheorghe, 78 km east of Brașov and 92 km north‑east of Ploiești. The event was classified as low‑intensity, with no significant damage or casualties reported. It follows a series of modest quakes this month and continues the pattern of frequent seismic activity in the Vrancea zone, Romania’s most active tectonic area, which has produced larger shocks earlier in the year, including a magnitude 4.5 quake on 26 February and a magnitude 4.0 event on 8 April.

Authorities continue to monitor the region’s seismic activity closely, noting that Vrancea earthquakes often occur at considerable depths and can be felt across eastern and south‑eastern Romania.
