Japan experiences magnitude 7.0 earthquake near Ogasawara Islands
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck deep beneath the Pacific Ocean near the Ogasawara Islands, approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo, on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported the tremor occurred at 11:10 local time at a significant depth of approximately 470 kilometers.
Due to the extreme depth of the seismic event, authorities confirmed there is no threat of a tsunami. The earthquake reached a maximum intensity of 3 on the Japanese seismic scale, specifically on the inhabited islands of Chichijima and Hahajima. Tremors were also felt across a wide area of eastern and northeastern Japan, including Tokyo, Miyagi, Fukushima, and Yamagata.
No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage have been confirmed. The Ogasawara Islands are located in the seismically active Izu-Bonin-Mariana region, where the Pacific plate subducts beneath the Philippine Sea plate.
