Pisa earthquake magnitude 4.3 civil protection rail suspension evacuations

A magnitude‑4.3 earthquake struck the Pisa area of Tuscany on 4 August 2026 at 10:15 CET. The epicentre was located about seven kilometres west of Pisa in the San Rossore park, at a shallow depth of roughly eight kilometres. The tremor was felt across northern Tuscany, including the provinces of Pisa, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Livorno and Florence.

No injuries or significant structural damage were reported. Precautionary evacuations affected three families (around five people) from a building in San Giuliano Terme. Hundreds of calls were logged on the emergency number 112.

Regional president Eugenio Giani activated the regional civil‑protection system, convened a crisis unit and coordinated checks on public buildings, schools and the historic Tower of Pisa, which remained undamaged. Rail services on the Pisa‑Empoli, Pisa‑Livorno, Pisa‑Lucca and Pisa‑Viareggio lines were suspended for about four hours while safety inspections were carried out.

A further aftershock of magnitude 3.2 was recorded at 13:04 CET, with its epicentre approximately five kilometres from Pisa at a depth of 11 km. Authorities continued monitoring and verification activities across the affected municipalities.
