Magnitude 6.0 earthquake strikes Gulf of Aden near Somalia and Yemen

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Gulf of Aden on Friday morning, located between the coasts of Somalia and Yemen. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the seismic event at approximately 12:07 a.m. local time at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

The epicenter was situated roughly 145 kilometers north of Alula in Somalia’s Puntland region and approximately 209 kilometers southeast of the Yemeni port city of Mukalla. Germany’s GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences independently confirmed the magnitude and depth.

Seismic monitors, including the USGS, indicated a low likelihood of significant economic loss or casualties. The USGS issued a Green PAGER alert, noting that the strongest shaking was estimated at level IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, which signifies light shaking. No tsunami threat was identified, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in northeastern Somalia.
