Tibet earthquake kills at least 16 and destroys hundreds of homes

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Nagqu region in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China on Thursday night at approximately 10:33 p.m. local time. The tremor, centered in Baqen County, caused significant casualties and structural damage in the high-altitude, mountainous area.

At least 16 people have been confirmed dead, with death toll estimates reaching 18 in some reports. Dozens of individuals were injured, including at least 11 reported to be in serious condition. The earthquake caused the collapse of at least 339 homes and 20 livestock shelters.

Emergency response efforts are underway, with more than 1,600 personnel deployed for search and rescue operations. Authorities have activated a Level II emergency response. Relief supplies, including 1,000 prefabricated housing units, 3,000 tents, folding beds, and winter clothing, are being dispatched to the affected communities.

Logistical challenges persist as rockfalls have blocked sections of National Highway 317, and the region has experienced disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services. Over 12,000 residents have been evacuated to safer locations. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 to 18 kilometers, and multiple aftershocks have been reported in the region.
