Magro River pollution linked to industrial fire in Montserrat
The Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar (CHJ) has identified a recent industrial fire in Montserrat as the likely cause of a chemical spill in the Magro River. The incident resulted in large accumulations of foam appearing in the river and irrigation channels, as well as the death of fish in the areas of Llombai and Alfarp.
Authorities suspect that firefighting foam used to extinguish the industrial blaze entered the sanitation system after the industrial park's retention system failed to contain it. The presence of foam became visible last Friday, causing significant concern among farmers in Alfarp, Catadau, and surrounding municipalities. As a precaution, the Alfarp irrigation community suspended watering operations pending water quality analysis results to ensure crops are not compromised.
