Magyar Nemzeti Bank banknote exchange deadlines

Holders of older Hungarian Forint banknotes should be aware of specific deadlines for exchanging them at the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB).

Old 10,000 HUF banknotes issued before 2014 can no longer be used for daily transactions. While the window for free exchange at commercial banks and post offices closed on December 31, 2022, these notes remain redeemable for their full value at the MNB retail treasury until December 31, 2039. Exchange can be done in person in Budapest or via registered mail.

Regarding the 1,000 HUF denomination, the 1998 edition lacks the holographic ring-holding raven found on newer versions. This 1998 version can be exchanged for its face value at the MNB until August 31, 2027. After this date, the central bank will no longer exchange them, and they may only be kept as collector's items. The current 2006 version, which includes the holographic security element, remains valid for use until 2037.
