Hungary records historic August budget deficit of 2,311 billion forints
Hungary has recorded a historic monthly budget deficit of 2,311.2 billion forints in August, bringing the eight-month fiscal deficit to 5,169.1 billion forints. The Ministry of Finance noted that this spike is largely due to a one-time 2,186.9 billion forint pre-financing of the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) programs. Without these RRF-related expenditures, the August deficit would have been significantly lower at 124.3 billion forints.
Finance Minister András Kármán stated that the annual deficit is expected to reach 7.5 percent of GDP, up from an original target of 3.7 percent. He attributed the widening gap to various factors, including previous government spending and unbudgeted items. The government has introduced a spending reduction plan to mitigate the impact.
Separately, the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) has launched an internal audit following reports by Bloomberg regarding the potential leak of non-public information related to interest rate paths. This follows a period of monetary easing where the MNB reduced the base rate to 5.50 percent in August, driven by low inflation and a stable forint. Analysts remain divided on whether the bank will continue interest rate cuts in September or pause due to global market volatility.
