Mahalakshmi Vrat 2026: Rituals and fasting rules for the 16-day observance

The 16-day Mahalakshmi Vrat is scheduled to conclude on October 3, 2026. This religious observance, which begins on Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami, is dedicated to seeking the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity, wealth, and happiness.

The final day, known as Udyapan, involves specific rituals including early morning prayers, the establishment of a Kalash, and performing a Havan with 108 offerings. Devotees are encouraged to honor 16 married women or 16 young girls by offering them food, traditional items, and gifts. A sacred thread with 16 knots is also used in the concluding ceremony.

During the fasting period, dietary restrictions are strictly observed. Permissible foods include fruits, dairy products, buckwheat, water chestnut flour, sago, and rock salt (Sendha Namak). Prohibited items include onion, garlic, common salt, wheat, rice, meat, alcohol, and highly processed or spicy foods. It is advised to break the fast gradually with light items like water or fruit to avoid digestive discomfort.
