Ghana Parliament approves Mahama Ayariga and Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as ministers

Ghana's Parliament has approved the ministerial nominations of Mahama Ayariga and Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings. Ayariga, the former Majority Leader, will lead the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, while Agyeman-Rawlings will head the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology.

During his vetting, Ayariga addressed several key policy areas. He expressed support for the concept of a National Cathedral but criticized its previous execution and location, stating it was a ‘good idea that was badly implemented.’ He pledged to consult Christian leaders regarding the project's future. On local governance, Ayariga identified a potential GH¢20 billion annual revenue stream from property rates, proposing a digital system to improve collection and reduce dependence on central government funding. He also emphasized that he would not interfere in chieftaincy disputes, respecting the jurisdiction of the Houses of Chiefs and the courts.

The ministerial changes have triggered a leadership reshuffle in Parliament. James Agalga has assumed office as the new Majority Leader, pledging a consensus-driven approach. In response, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin offered cooperation and a commitment to rigorous research-based debate, while maintaining his objective to eventually turn the Minority into a Majority.
