Mahamadou Diaby retires from professional rugby at 36

Professional rugby player Mahamadou Diaby has announced his retirement at age 36. Despite playing at a high level recently with Perpignan and Montpellier, the lock decided to end his career following the conclusion of the season with Montpellier.

Diaby reflected on his decision, noting that while the announcement may have surprised observers, he felt it was the right time to transition. He cited several factors for his choice, including the salary cap constraints during discussions with Montpellier regarding a contract extension, a desire to be near his family in Bordeaux, and his progress in coaching training.

He is now transitioning into a coaching role as a member of the staff for the Lionnes du Stade Bordelais. Diaby also looked back on his eight seasons with Union Bordeaux-Bègles, where he was part of the team that achieved a European championship in 2025, stating he has no regrets about his career.
