Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno named Champion of polio eradication in Lake Chad Basin

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has been named the ‘Champion of vaccination and the fight against polio in the Lake Chad Basin.’ The distinction was awarded by partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gavi, and the Rotary Club, among others.

The recognition follows efforts to increase vaccination coverage in Chad, which rose from 41% in 2017 to 71% in 2025, with a target of 90% by 2029. The initiative aims to stop the circulation of the poliovirus in the country by December 2027.

During a meeting in N’Djamena with a delegation of twelve international representatives, discussions focused on addressing challenges such as population movement, insecurity, and access issues that affect ‘zero-dose’ children. In response, the President has instructed the government to organize a high-level regional forum in N’Djamena to strengthen vaccination efforts across the Lake Chad Basin. Additionally, the President has been invited to attend a vaccination-focused event in New York during the 81st UN General Assembly.
