Bawumia calls for healthcare policy shift in Ghana

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2028 presidential candidate, has called for a paradigm shift in Ghana’s healthcare policies following consultations with the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).

During a meeting with the GMA National Executive Committee at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, discussions focused on critical challenges within the medical sector. Key issues raised by the association included the retention of health professionals, remuneration, the inequitable distribution of doctors across the country, and healthcare infrastructure.

Additional topics of concern included emergency preparedness, conditions of service, deprived-area allowances, and the role of the private sector in healthcare delivery. The meeting also addressed the requirement for doctors to undergo licensing examinations as mandated by the Medical and Dental Council. Dr. Bawumia noted that the insights provided by the GMA leadership could lead to transformational improvements in the welfare of medical practitioners and the broader health system.
