Maharashtra Bans Energy Drink Sales Within 500 m of Schools

The Maharashtra government has ordered a ban on the sale of high‑caffeine energy drinks within a 500‑metre radius of school campuses. The decision was announced in the state legislative assembly by Food and Drug Administration Minister Narhari Zirwal after concerns were raised by BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute about health hazards for children. The ban covers products such as Sting, Red Bull, Monster, Hell Energy and others, and the state FDA will enforce strict action against vendors who violate the restriction.

The move follows recent Food Safety and Standards Authority of India notices to six companies for misleading branding and is part of a broader statewide crackdown led by newly appointed FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, which also targets illicit gutkha, pan masala and unhygienic eateries. Schools will be encouraged to run awareness programmes on the risks of energy‑drink consumption.
