Maharashtra Cabinet mandates healthy food in government meetings and canteens
The Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has mandated the provision of healthy snacks and balanced meals in all government and semi-government meetings, official events, and canteens. This initiative aims to promote nutritious eating habits among government officers and employees.
The new policy restricts the serving of highly oily and heavily processed foods, such as samosas, pakoras, and various fast foods, during tea breaks and official gatherings. Instead, priority will be given to nutrient-rich items including seasonal fruits, boiled eggs, sprouts, poha, idli-sambar, ragi and jowar-bajra bhakri, salads, lentils, and legumes.
To ensure compliance, the inclusion of these healthy menu options will be a mandatory requirement in all new catering contracts for relevant offices. The government has advised departments to consult with employees regarding health-conscious practices and to refer to guidelines from the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) when finalizing menus.
