The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) announced an indefinite statewide strike that began at midnight on 5 August 2026. The protest targets the state government's resolution dated 3 August that would allow BHMS graduates who have completed a Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) to register with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) and prescribe allopathic medicines.

During the first 24 hours, emergency and casualty services were maintained, but all outpatient (OPD) services, elective surgeries and academic activities were suspended. In Sambhajinagar, 80‑90 % of private‑hospital OPDs were closed, affecting more than 10,000 patients and postponing over 2,500 surgeries.

The Bombay High Court intervened, ordering resident doctors to end the strike immediately and warning that salaries could be stopped if they did not return to work. Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad warned that any patient death during the strike would be unacceptable. MARD president Dr Atharva Shinde assured the court that the strike would be called off.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has threatened a nationwide strike if the MMC registration decision is not withdrawn, raising the issue to national health authorities and the Prime Minister’s office.
