Maharashtra faces severe dry spell across 19 districts

A prolonged monsoon break has triggered a severe dry spell across Maharashtra, affecting 83 talukas in 19 districts. The lack of rainfall for over 20 days has placed Kharif crops at risk and pushed several districts toward drought conditions. The hardest-hit regions include Marathwada, Vidarbha, and Western Maharashtra.

During a recent Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule directed state administration to remain on high alert. While no immediate relief package has been announced, the government is preparing emergency relief lists and evaluating fodder supplies.

Authorities clarified that a formal drought declaration cannot be made immediately. To comply with National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) guidelines and Central Drought Management norms, official crop-damage surveys (Panchnamas) and ground verifications must be conducted after October 5. Conducting these assessments earlier could disqualify farmers from receiving central financial aid.

In response to the potential water crisis, local administrations, particularly in Marathwada, have been ordered to prioritize and reserve existing dam storage strictly for drinking water purposes.
