Maharashtra government grants one-year relief for bulk oil traders

The Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has granted a one-year temporary reprieve to traders selling bulk oil. This decision follows meetings with trader delegations regarding the enforcement of a 2011 law governing oil sales.

To facilitate the transition to legal compliance, the government will establish a joint committee comprising Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials and trader representatives. This committee is tasked with determining the specific operational changes traditional traders must implement to meet food safety standards.

The reprieve comes after FDA reports highlighted violations such as the use of substandard or reused containers and the repeated heating of oil. While the government aims to uphold quality standards, Fadnavis noted the necessity of balancing law enforcement with the needs of low-income consumers who rely on bulk oil. The Chief Minister emphasized that this one-year period is a final extension, and no further delays will be granted after the deadline.
