Maharashtra government launches water management initiatives
The Maharashtra government has initiated large-scale water management strategies to address potential shortages and long-term sustainability. In the Beed district, administration officials are implementing a micro-planning approach for 1,037 villages and hamlets to combat potential water scarcity caused by irregular rainfall. This plan, backed by the Maharashtra Groundwater (Development and Management) Act, 2009, is based on scientific studies conducted by geologists and the Groundwater Survey and Development Agency. The strategy divides the period from October 2026 to June 2027 into three distinct phases to address varying levels of water depletion across different geographic areas.
Simultaneously, the state has constituted a high-level study group to draft a 25-year water management blueprint for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Chaired by Sanjay Belsare, the panel is tasked with evaluating future demand, assessing resources, and identifying structural shortfalls for the years 2031, 2041, and 2051. The group will conduct an integrated audit across domestic, industrial, and commercial sectors to ensure long-term sustainability amidst rapid population growth and urban expansion.
