Maharashtra government to fund lifetime care for retired police dogs

The Maharashtra government has introduced a new policy ensuring that retired police dogs will remain with their long-time handlers for life rather than being put up for adoption to third parties. Under this initiative, the Maharashtra Home Department will provide state funding to cover all post-retirement expenses, including healthcare, nutrition, and daily living needs.

Dog handlers in Navi Mumbai have expressed significant relief regarding the decision. Previously, handlers reported feeling anxiety and pain regarding the well-being of their canine partners once their service ended. One handler, Gaikwad, noted that his Doberman, Arya, is set to retire after ten years of service, and the new policy ensures the dog will face no difficulties in his later years.
