Maharashtra mandates Marathi language proficiency for commercial drivers

The Maharashtra government has introduced amendments to the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 2026, making a working knowledge of the Marathi language mandatory for all commercial passenger-vehicle drivers. This requirement applies to taxi drivers, auto-rickshaw operators, and drivers of app-based motor cabs equipped with electronic meters.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that the amendments aim to remove ambiguity and ensure drivers can effectively communicate with passengers to facilitate safe and convenient journeys. The mandate extends to both those applying for commercial driving authorization under Rule 4 and authorized drivers of app-based cabs under the new Rule 22.

Drivers who fail to comply with these language requirements face significant penalties. Initial violations may result in a suspension of driving authorization for up to three months. Repeat offenders risk the permanent cancellation of their driving licenses or commercial permits.
