Mumbai heavy rain triggers orange alert, school closures and deadly landslides

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed Mumbai and surrounding districts under an orange weather alert on July 6, upgrading to a red warning on July 7 as torrential rain and gusty winds persisted. The alert prompted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to declare a precautionary holiday for all government, private and civic‑run schools and colleges, and to advise private offices to allow work‑from‑home while non‑essential government offices operated for only a half‑day.

Heavy downpours produced record rainfalls of 300‑380 mm in 48 hours, causing widespread water‑logging, tree falls and wall collapses. Landslides in the Pune‑Maval area and on the Mumbai‑Pune Expressway’s “Missing Link” claimed at least seven lives and injured several others, while a landslide on the expressway halted traffic for more than 18 hours before two lanes reopened after safety inspections. Train services were delayed or suspended, and high‑tide warnings were issued for the coastal belt.

City authorities mobilised emergency teams, deployed de‑watering pumps and issued safety guidelines for construction sites and the public. The combined impact disrupted transport, strained utilities and highlighted gaps in urban flood preparedness.
