Maharashtra orders Uber, Ola and Rapido to register, raises ride‑cancellation penalties

The Maharashtra state government has issued new aggregator rules requiring ride‑hailing platforms Uber, Ola and Rapido to register with the Transport Department and obtain a state‑issued licence by 1 September 2026. All vehicles used on the apps must carry commercial permits, valid insurance and drivers must complete five days of mandatory training.

The regulations also increase the fine for drivers who cancel rides to airports, hospitals or railway stations five‑fold. The Transport Department said companies that fail to comply will face strict legal action. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said the measures aim to improve passenger safety and bring app‑based transport services under clear regulatory oversight.
