Maharashtra reports 13,928 farmer suicides since 2022
Data obtained through Right to Information (RTI) requests reveals that 13,928 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra between January 2022 and June 2026, averaging more than eight deaths per day.
Of these cases, 8,145 families were deemed eligible for government assistance. While 7,850 of these families received 100,000 rupees, 295 eligible families are still awaiting aid. Additionally, 4,042 cases were declared ineligible, and 941 remain under investigation.
Jitendra Ghadge of the Young Whistleblowers Foundation reported that the state's Relief and Rehabilitation Department refused to provide district-wise or monthly breakdowns of the data. Ghadge alleged that the department's refusal to release detailed statistics is unprecedented in the last decade and suggested potential administrative pressure influenced the decision.
