Maharashtra sugarcane cutters halt work over wage demands

Approximately 500,000 sugarcane cutters in Maharashtra have halted work following the expiration of their previous wage agreement. The Maharashtra State Sugarcane Harvesting and Transport Union is demanding a new wage increase, stating they will not resume harvesting until at least 80% of their demands are met. A previous agreement, finalized in early 2024, provided wage increases for the 2023-2026 crushing seasons, but no new solution has been reached after three months of discussions with the government.

The labor stoppage occurs amid severe drought conditions in the Marathwada and Solapur districts, leaving farmers struggling to keep crops alive. While sugar mills are prepared to begin the crushing season, the unresolved wage dispute remains a primary obstacle.

Beyond the economic dispute, the labor conditions for sugarcane cutters in India involve extreme physical hardship. Workers often travel long distances to work 14-hour days in makeshift camps lacking clean water or sanitation. Female workers face significant reproductive health risks, as the pressure to avoid wage deductions for missed shifts due to menstrual pain or pregnancy often leads to severe health consequences.
