Maharashtra Transport Department tests 5,211 drivers on Marathi proficiency

The Maharashtra Transport Department has launched a statewide inspection campaign to ensure commercial vehicle drivers possess practical knowledge of the Marathi language. During the initial phase of the drive, officials tested 5,211 drivers, including 3,942 in Mumbai.

As a result of these inspections, 777 drivers—the majority of whom operate in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region—were issued notices for failing to demonstrate sufficient Marathi language skills. These drivers have been granted a one-month grace period to acquire the necessary proficiency. Failure to comply may lead to stricter penalties, including the suspension or cancellation of driving licenses.

The mandate, which was formalized in August, applies to auto-rickshaw, taxi, and app-based cab drivers to facilitate effective communication with passengers. While Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik noted that drivers are being given adequate time to learn, Union Minister Giriraj Singh has called for sufficient timeframes for those moving to the state for livelihood purposes.
