Maharlika Investment Corp. advances energy and aviation deals
The Philippines’ Maharlika Investment Corp. (MIC) is advancing several strategic investment initiatives. The Department of Energy aims to complete a P19.7-billion deal for MIC to enter the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) before the end of the year. This follows the government's move in January 2025 to acquire a 20-percent stake in Synergy Grid & Development Phils. Inc., which holds 60 percent of the voting rights in the grid operator.
Through this transaction, MIC is expected to secure two board seats each at SGP and NGCP. While MIC will not manage day-to-day operations, the deal provides the government with increased visibility and access to financial statements.
Additionally, MIC is exploring electric aviation as a strategic investment area to strengthen national resilience and connectivity. The fund is looking for projects that align with its mandate to deploy capital into critical sectors such as energy, logistics, and transport, specifically targeting an economic internal rate of return of at least 10%.
