Mahatma Gandhi: Philosophy of nonviolence and courage

Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy emphasizes that true courage is found in vulnerability and nonviolence. He posited that a coward is incapable of showing love, whereas expressing emotion and vulnerability is a hallmark of the brave. For Gandhi, love is not a spontaneous feeling but a constant decision that requires facing the risks of rejection and pain.

His principles of nonviolence, or ahimsa, and satyagraha—the power of truth—were central to his struggle against British colonial rule in India and his early activism against racial discrimination in South Africa. Gandhi advocated for civil disobedience and peaceful resistance as tools to achieve justice, dignity, and independence, arguing that true freedom must include the eradication of poverty and social injustice.
