Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene steps down

Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2027 season, ending a decade-long association with the franchise. Jayawardene, who led the team to three titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020, decided to depart following a disappointing 2026 campaign where the team finished ninth in the standings.

Nita Ambani praised Jayawardene’s “calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game,” noting his significant contribution to the team. The decision to part ways reportedly stemmed from a 2026 season review where both the franchise and player leadership group agreed a fresh approach was necessary.

The search for a successor faces early challenges. High-profile candidates, including former India head coach Rahul Dravid, Adam Gilchrist, and Eoin Morgan, have reportedly declined the role. Dravid is said to be prioritizing family commitments. Other potential candidates mentioned include Mike Hussey, Adrian Birrell, and Aaron Finch. The franchise aims to finalize a new head coach before the player retention deadline on November 15.
