Mahershala Ali stars in ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’

The upcoming action drama ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’, written and directed by Bassam Tariq and starring Mahershala Ali, draws inspiration from both Islamic teachings and a cancelled Marvel project.

The film’s title is derived from a well-known Hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad emphasizes the importance of honoring one’s mother by naming her three times before the father. This religious reference is integrated into the film through voice-over narration, centering the narrative on African American Muslim culture.

The project also serves as a successor to a failed ‘Blade’ reboot. Tariq and Ali were previously set to collaborate on a Marvel production, but Tariq exited in 2022 due to production delays. Ali has noted that the physical training he underwent for the vampire hunter role was repurposed for his performance in this new film.

Set in Houston, the story follows Latif, a devoutly religious hitman who adheres to a code of honor involving only blades. Following the death of his wife, Latif must navigate his faith and his responsibilities as a guardian to his three children while facing external threats.
