Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena denies vehicle and fuel misuse allegations
Former Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has issued a formal rejection of allegations regarding the excessive use of official vehicles and fuel during his tenure. Describing the claims as ‘malicious distortion’ and politically motivated misinformation, Abeywardena asserted that all resource usage was strictly within his official entitlements and in compliance with established regulations.
Abeywardena noted that a special audit report covering parliamentary officials from 2015 to 2024 was being selectively highlighted to target him. He maintained that the vehicles used were officially provided by Parliament for his duties and security requirements, particularly following the strengthening of his security detail during the political and social unrest in July 2022. He stated that vehicle use for advance, escort, and security transport was based on recommendations from the Defence Ministry.
While critics have raised questions regarding the accountability of public officials and the use of state assets in Sri Lanka, Abeywardena expressed confidence that a formal inquiry would vindicate him, noting that he has previously clarified these matters.
