Mahindra expands Battery-as-a-Service program for electric SUVs

Mahindra & Mahindra has expanded its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme to its entire Electric Origin SUV lineup, including the BE 6 Sporteq, XEV 9S, and XEV 9e models. The program separates the cost of the battery from the vehicle price, allowing customers to finance the battery through a separate contract.

By moving approximately ₹8 lakh out of the upfront vehicle price, Mahindra aims to make its electric SUVs more accessible to a broader range of buyers. Under this structure, the effective battery usage cost is set at ₹3.75 per km. For example, the BE 6 Sporteq now starts at ₹11.45 lakh, the XEV 9S at ₹12.65 lakh, and the XEV 9e at ₹13.90 lakh, excluding battery and other statutory costs.

The BaaS initiative also covers larger battery packs, such as 70kWh and 79kWh variants, which typically increase the initial purchase price of an EV. This strategy positions Mahindra more competitively against other manufacturers like Tata Motors and JSW MG Motor India in the electric vehicle market.
