Mahjong popularity surges across Canada
Mahjong is experiencing a surge in popularity across Canada, attracting a diverse demographic of players across different age groups and ethnicities. According to data from Eventbrite, while the number of Mahjong-related events in Canada grew by 5% in 2025, the number of participants skyrocketed by 70%.
In Vancouver, the company Lucky Tile has seen high demand for its Mahjong classes, with approximately 1,000 people enrolling in courses that teach Hong Kong-style Mahjong. Participants include a mix of roughly 50% Asian and 50% non-Asian individuals. Similarly, the Mah Society of Edmonton reports a revival of the game among people in their 20s and 30s, with regular sessions attracting around 50 players.
Beyond entertainment, proponents suggest the game serves as a tool for social connection and cultural preservation, helping players disconnect from the digital world and engage in face-to-face interaction. The trend spans major cities from Vancouver to Montreal.
