MAHLE begins serial production of EV battery cooling plates at Montblanc plant in Spain

MAHLE has started serial production of a new lithium‑ion battery cooling plate at its Montblanc facility in Tarragona, Spain, coinciding with the plant’s 50th anniversary and 25 years since joining the global automotive supplier. The plates keep battery temperatures below 40 °C and ensure uniform heat distribution, improving performance, fast‑charging capacity and durability of electric‑vehicle batteries.

The project involved an investment of several tens of millions of euros to modernise the plant, expanding its capacity to up to 15,000 units per week. Production will ramp from 1,000 units weekly to 8,000 by the end of 2026, with the possibility of peak output of 15,000 units depending on demand. The highly automated line employs 750 staff, generating qualified jobs and strengthening MAHLE’s industrial presence in Spain. Plant director Roger Gombau said the transformation was completed in record time and the facility is ready to scale further if market demand grows.
