Mahle launches range extender technology for electric trucks

Mahle has launched concrete projects with commercial vehicle manufacturers to develop a range extender for electric trucks. The system aims to address charging infrastructure gaps by using a small internal combustion engine as a generator to provide electricity, while maintaining purely electric wheel drive.

The integrated unit includes a high-voltage generator with 110 kW continuous and 130 kW peak power, along with thermal management, fuel tanks, and exhaust treatment. By replacing a portion of the battery, the system could reduce vehicle weight by approximately 600 kg. For a properly designed truck, Mahle promises a total range exceeding 800 km, split between battery power and the range extender.
