Mahmood Azhar Chaudhry faces court over fraud and citizenship allegations

The fraud case involving Pakistan-born businessman Mahmood Azhar Chaudhry and his wife, Neelam, returns to the Limbe Magistrate’s Court in Blantyre on Monday, August 24, 2026. The hearing is expected to determine whether existing arrest warrants against the couple will be permanently vacated.

Chaudhry faces a range of serious allegations, including the fraudulent acquisition of Malawian citizenship, the illegal externalisation of foreign currency, and the diversion of public resources. Specifically, he is accused of misappropriating funds intended for the Rural Electrification Project, involving losses estimated at hundreds of millions of kwacha. Additional claims include posing as an unaccredited consular representative of Pakistan to avoid taxes and lying under oath regarding diplomatic status.

Neelam Chaudhry is also implicated, facing accusations of making false statements to obtain citizenship and land. Private prosecutors are currently seeking the involvement of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to transition the matter into a full state prosecution. The case has drawn significant scrutiny from human rights activists and security experts, who argue the allegations undermine national sovereignty and the authority of Malawian institutions.
