Mahoning Valley Sanitary District water rate hikes approved

Judges from the Mahoning County and Trumbull County Common Pleas Courts have approved a series of water rate increases for customers of the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District (MVSD). The rate hikes are scheduled to take effect between January 1, 2027, and December 31, 2029.

Under the approved schedule, rates per 1,000 gallons will increase by $0.3660 on January 1, 2027; $0.0519 on January 1, 2028; and $0.1993 on January 1, 2029. The MVSD, which provides bulk drinking water to residents in Youngstown, Niles, and McDonald via the Meander Creek Reservoir, will maintain a rolling five-year financial plan and conduct annual water reviews.

The funds generated from these increases are intended for operations, maintenance, and meeting loan obligations. The rates will remain in effect until further court approval or until the MVSD determines that lower rates can meet the district's needs.
