Maia municipality promotes sustainable school commutes

The Municipality of Maia is encouraging families to use sustainable alternatives to cars for school commutes to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety around educational institutions. This initiative coincides with European Mobility Week, which runs until September 22.

Local authorities highlighted the accessibility of the Metro do Porto network, noting that several stations are within a short walking distance of various schools. For instance, the Fórum Maia station provides pedestrian access to the Maia Secondary School and several primary schools within minutes. Other stations, such as Parque Maia, Mandim, and Castêlo da Maia, also offer close proximity to local educational centers.

To support this transition, Metro do Porto has increased service frequency and adjusted schedules since September 7 to accommodate the return to school and work. In addition to public transit, the municipality is promoting walking, cycling, and carpooling to foster a more sustainable use of public space.
