Maia Sandu addresses challenges in implementing violence prevention laws

Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that while the country has improved its legislation regarding violence against women, ensuring the effective application of these laws remains a significant challenge. Speaking at a conference organized by the National Coalition “Life Without Violence” in Chișinău, Sandu noted that changing legal frameworks is easier than coordinating the various institutions and mechanisms required for successful implementation.

Key issues identified include poor communication between responsible institutions and delayed interventions in critical situations. Sandu emphasized the need for better coordination between the police and other involved entities. Additionally, the President supported revising school curricula to include more educational activities focused on violence prevention.

Alina Cebotari, executive director of the National Coalition “Life Without Violence”, stressed that safety is a fundamental right and a prerequisite for women and girls to exercise all other rights and participate in social life. Participants at the conference also criticized patriarchal social norms that stigmatize female independence and the expression of opinions.
